In late November, Surrey RCMP warned businesses about attempted extortions targeting business owners.

Abbotsford Police issued a similar warning the same week after several businesses received a letter requesting money in exchange for “protection from future violence.”

At a meeting in early December, South Asian business owners from Surrey and Abbotsford said they wanted police to do more to stop extortion attempts that some feared would lead to violence.

Then Mounties linked a White Rock shooting to the extortion attempts threatening businesses.

On Thursday, Surrey RCMP officers arrested two men, both in their 20s, in a residential area of Cloverdale. They were released pending further investigation.

“These arrests are a significant development in this ongoing investigation,” Surrey RCMP’s Sgt. Derek Bonner said in a statement.

Investigators are releasing a photo of a vehicle they believe may be connected to the case.

The vehicle is described as a white Audi e-tron, between the years 2019 and 2023. Police believe this vehicle was used during the White Rock shooting on Dec. 4., when shots were fired at a house in the 13900-block of Marine Drive.

Anyone who recognizes the vehicle is asked to call Surrey RCMP. Mounties also ask any business owners who have been threatened to call their local police department.
